Child Abuse Prevention Month
WHEREAS, the safety and development of children is a top priority for our state and we all play an important role in preventing child abuse and neglect; and
WHEREAS, approximately three million children are reported abused or neglected in this country each year; and in North Dakota each year, according to the Department of Human Services, over 1,500 children are found to be victims of child abuse or neglect; and
WHEREAS, children have the right to feel safe and unconditionally loved and to be provided every opportunity to learn, grow and thrive; and
WHEREAS, child maltreatment occurs when people find themselves in stressful situations without community resources and the majority of child abuse cases stem from situations and conditions that could be preventable in an engaged and supportive community; and
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect can be reduced by making sure each family has the support they need to raise their children in a healthy environment; and
WHEREAS, collaboration among families, caring communities, prevent Child Abuse North Dakota, the North Dakota Department of Human Services, and other public and private partners is resulting in effective child abuse prevention programs that strengthen families and communities in our state.
NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim April 2014, CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH in the state of North Dakota.
