Hoeven Proclaims September 11 Patriot Day And Directs Flags To Fly At Half Staff
Governor Encourages North Dakotans To Observe A Moment Of Silence
BISMARCK, N.D. – In accordance with a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush, Gov. John Hoeven has declared September 11 Patriot Day in the state to mark the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks carried out against this nation on September 11, 2001.
Hoeven is directing all government agencies to fly the American and North Dakota flags at half staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, September 11. He is also encouraging North Dakotans to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies, activities and remembrance services, to display the flags at half staff from their homes, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 7:46 a.m. CDT to honor the innocent lives lost on that day.
"As we prepare to mark the sixth anniversary of this solemn and defining moment in our nation's history, we remember the thousands of lives that were lost, and the innocent men, women and children forever changed by these acts of terror," Hoeven said. "On Patriot Day, we honor the heroism of the police officers, firefighters, rescue personnel, members of the military and private citizens who demonstrated incredible courage and risked their lives to save their fellow citizens. We pray for our brave men and women in uniform and all of our veterans, the dedicated members of our public safety, law enforcement and intelligence communities, and the thousands of others who work hard each day to protect our state and nation."
Hoeven will commemorate the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks by attending a memorial service at the International Peace Garden, beginning at 11 a.m.
