Hoeven Statement On U.S. House Passage Of The Farm Bill
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representative's passage of the Farm Bill:
"We are pleased that the U.S. House has passed the new Farm Bill with a strong bipartisan vote. This is a signal of the broad support for this legislation. We will continue to press for its passage as the farm bill goes to the Senate and President."
Last week Hoeven urged Agriculture Sec. Ed Schafer to support the agreement, and President Bush to sign it.
Earlier this week, Hoeven sent letters to the nation's Governors encouraging them to urge their congressional delegations to support the recent Farm Bill agreement struck last week by a U.S. House and Senate conference committee. He asked them to press for support of this important legislation because it is important to our farmers and ranchers in North Dakota, and it is also important for the nation's consumers and urban communities.
The new Farm Bill includes a price safety net for farmers and ranchers who produce the nation's food supply, but it also contains more dollars for important nutrition programs, including support for school lunch programs, food banks and food stamps. In fact, 73.5 percent of authorized funding will go to help feed children, the elderly, and the poor. Other important programs in the legislation support renewable energy, conservation, rural development and agricultural research.
