Fire Prevention Week
WHEREAS, the state of North Dakota is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern, and homes are where people are at the greatest risk from fire; with cooking, heating equipment and cigarette smoking the leading causes of home fires; and
WHEREAS, in 2009, more than 2,500 people nationwide died as a result of home fires and burns, and nearly two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in which no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms were present; and
WHEREAS, North Dakota’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education, including informing the public about the importance of smoke alarm installation and maintenance and having a home fire escape plan; and
WHEREAS, North Dakota citizens are encouraged to take personal steps to increase their safety from fires, especially in their homes; residents who have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and
WHEREAS, the 2011 Fire Prevention Week theme, It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect Your Family from Fire! effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to keep our homes and families safe from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round.
NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim October 9-15, 2011, FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in the state of North Dakota.
